Lunnasting Primary School is a small two teacher school, with a Nursery class, set in the north east mainland of Shetland. It serves the community of Vidlin. This covers the area from Laxo to Lunna and Sweening to Lunning. Click here to see a more detailed map of the local community.
A school has been on this site since 1830. We were fortunate to have a new school built over the old one and after a year of temporary accommodation in the village hall moved into the new school in 1995.
There are 21 pupils in the school, split into two classes, Primary 1 - 3 and Primary 4 - 7. There are 12 pupils in the Nursery.
This website sets out to explain some of the wide range of activities and connections that characterise the Lunnasting School, and to show you examples of the work carried out by the pupils.
Lunnasting Primary School is one of six which send children to Brae High School after Primary 7 (age 11 - 12). This is in the village of Brae, about 12 miles away.
All parents of children at the school are members of The Parent Forum. They organise fund raising, a visit to the pantomime, Halloween Party and Christmas Party among other things.
We have an active Parent Council which holds regular meetings.

Lunnasting Nursery opened in January 2009, previously it had run as a Playgroup. In Nursery we aim to develop the whole child through a variety of activities as well as encouraging individual interests. The Nursery is situated within Lunnasting Primary School and is very well resourced. We regularly join in with whole school activities, which allows for a seamless transition from Nursery to Primary One.
We are aware of the benefit to children when their parents are involved in their education. To this end, parents/carers are always welcome to visit the nursery to speak with staff or share information/expertise.
The Nursery meets from 9.15-12.25pm each morning, with a weekly contribution of £2.50 which goes towards snack, trips and other relevant activities. There are twelve places. The Nursery Teacher is Mrs Madge Gregg-Masterton, Mrs Inga Irvine is our Early Years Worker and Mrs Julia Odie is our Early Years Assistant.
